Success Story: How CASHD Changed My Life

Amaka shares her inspiring journey from a shy participant to a confident peer educator making a difference in her community.

From Participant to Peer Educator: Amaka's Story

This is Amaka's story, shared with her permission to inspire other young people.

"Two years ago, I was a quiet 17-year-old who struggled with low self-esteem and felt lost about my future. A friend invited me to a CASHD workshop, and I almost didn't go. That decision to attend changed my life."

Finding My Voice

"At my first workshop, I was amazed by how the facilitators created such a safe, welcoming space. For the first time, I could talk about issues I faced without judgment. I learned about:

  • Understanding my body and reproductive health
  • Managing stress and anxiety
  • Setting goals and planning for my future
  • Standing up for myself and my values

Becoming a Peer Educator

"After six months of regular participation, CASHD staff encouraged me to join their peer educator training program. I was nervous but excited. The training taught me facilitation skills, public speaking, and how to support other young people."

Making an Impact

"Now, as a peer educator, I've facilitated workshops for over 500 students in my school and neighboring communities. I've seen firsthand how knowledge empowers young people to make better decisions about their health and future."

Looking to the Future

"Because of CASHD, I discovered my passion for public health. I'm now in my first year at the University studying Public Health, intending to become a youth health advocate. I want to expand the work CASHD does to reach even more young people across Nigeria."

My Message to Other Young People

"If you're struggling or feeling alone, reach out. Organisations like CASHD are here to support you. Attending that first workshop was scary, but it opened doors I never knew existed. Don't be afraid to seek help, ask questions, and invest in yourself. You have so much potential, and the right support can help you unlock it."
